The Complete Guide to Car Insurance in Florida: What Fort Pierce Residents Need to Know
Car insurance in Florida works differently than most other states. As someone who's been helping Fort Pierce residents with their insurance for years, I can tell you: most people don't understand what they have until they need it.
Let me walk you through everything you need to know about car insurance in Florida.
Florida is a No-Fault State—What Does That Mean?
This is the #1 thing that confuses people.
Florida is a no-fault state. That means YOUR insurance pays for YOUR injuries first, regardless of who caused the accident.
Here's how it works:
- You get in an accident
- Even if the other person ran a red light and hit you
- YOUR insurance (specifically your PIP coverage) pays for YOUR medical bills first
- You can't sue the other driver unless your injuries meet certain thresholds
For property damage, it's different. You CAN go after the other person's insurance if they were at fault. But for injuries, your insurance pays first.
This is why having good coverage in Florida matters so much.
Florida's Minimum Insurance Requirements
Florida only requires two types of coverage:
- Personal Injury Protection (PIP) - $10,000 minimum
- Property Damage Liability (PDL) - $10,000 minimum
That's it. Florida doesn't even require bodily injury liability coverage (though you absolutely should have it).
Here's the problem: $10,000 doesn't cover much.
If you're in a serious accident, $10,000 in medical bills gets used up fast. If you total someone's car, $10,000 might not even cover the damage.
That's why I never recommend just getting the minimum. It leaves you exposed.
The Coverage You Actually Need
Here's what I recommend for most Fort Pierce residents:
1. PIP (Personal Injury Protection) - This covers your medical bills and lost wages after an accident, regardless of fault. $10,000 minimum, but consider higher limits.
2. Bodily Injury Liability - This protects you if you hurt someone else in an accident. Not required in Florida, but absolutely necessary. I recommend at least $100,000 per person / $300,000 per accident.
3. Property Damage Liability - This pays for damage you cause to someone else's property. $10,000 minimum, but I recommend at least $50,000.
4. Collision Coverage - This pays to fix YOUR car if you hit something, regardless of fault. Required if you're financing or leasing. Optional if you own your car outright (but still a good idea).
5. Comprehensive Coverage - This covers damage to your car from things OTHER than collisions: theft, hail, flooding, hitting an animal. Essential in Florida where storms are common.
6. Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage - This is HUGE. About 20% of Florida drivers don't have insurance. If one of them hits you, this coverage protects you. I never recommend skipping this.
What "Full Coverage" Actually Means
People call me all the time asking for "full coverage."
Here's the truth: "full coverage" isn't a real insurance term.
When most people say "full coverage," they mean:
- Liability coverage (PIP, bodily injury, property damage)
- Collision coverage
- Comprehensive coverage
But "full coverage" doesn't mean everything is covered. You still have deductibles. You still have limits. You still need to understand your policy.
Common Mistakes Fort Pierce Residents Make
Mistake #1: Dropping Coverage After Paying Off the Car
Once your car is paid off, you're not required to carry collision and comprehensive anymore. A lot of people drop it to save money.
Bad idea.
If you get in an accident and total your car, you get nothing. You're out a car with no payout. Keep the coverage.
Mistake #2: Not Understanding Deductibles
Your deductible is what YOU pay before insurance kicks in.
If you have a $500 deductible and $600 in damage, you pay $500 and insurance pays $100. Then your rate goes up for filing a claim.
Sometimes it's better to just pay the $600 yourself and avoid the rate increase. Call your agent first to do the math.
Mistake #3: Thinking Minimum Coverage is Enough
$10,000 in PIP coverage might sound like a lot until you're in a hospital for a week. $10,000 in property damage might sound like a lot until you total someone's $40,000 car.
Minimum coverage leaves you exposed. Don't just get the cheapest option.
Special Florida Situations
Red Light Camera Tickets
These affect your insurance for 3-5 years. Yes, even though they're not "moving violations," insurance companies still count them. Yellow means stop in Fort Pierce.
SR-22 and FR-44 Requirements
If you've had a DUI or certain violations, Florida requires you to file an SR-22 or FR-44. These aren't insurance—they're proof that you have insurance. We can help you get this filed.
Hurricane Season
Comprehensive coverage is essential in Florida. If a tree falls on your car, if your car floods, if hail damages your windshield—that's comprehensive coverage.
How to Actually Save Money on Car Insurance in Florida
Don't just buy the cheapest policy. Here's how to save money while staying properly covered:
1. Bundle Your Policies
Combine your auto and renters/home insurance with the same company. You'll save on both.
2. Ask About Discounts
- Good driver discount
- Multi-car discount
- Defensive driving course discount
- Pay-in-full discount
3. Review Your Policy Yearly
Did you move? Did your mileage change? Did you pay off your car? These things affect your rate. Review your policy every January.
4. Keep Your Coverage Continuous
Gaps in coverage = higher rates when you return. Even if money is tight, keep at least minimum coverage active.
